How to select the grinding capacity of planetary ball mill

Mar 11,2026

Planetary ball mills operate on the principle of planetary motion, using the combination of the grinding jar's revolution and rotation to drive the grinding balls at high speed. This high speed utilizes strong friction and impact forces to achieve ultrafine grinding of the sample. So, how much material can a planetary ball mill grind in a single pass?

Theoretically, lab planetary ball mill's capacity is determined by the sum of the volumes of all its grinding jars in liters. The size of the grinding jars determines the amount of material that can be ground. A standard version of the mill requires at least two grinding jars to ensure balanced operation. For example, a 4-liter planetary ball mill has four grinding jars, each with a capacity of 1L. Since the grinding jars contain grinding balls that occupy about one-third of the jar's space (meaning each jar can hold about one-third of the material), the remaining one-third is for the working space. Therefore, if you need to process 4L of material at a time, you will need to choose a relatively larger machine.
